Shining the Parsons Public Relations’ light on the extraordinary to inspire change

Van is the man.  He is so inspiring and intelligent and daring and energetic…and not to mention sexy.

Van JonesVan Jones was in Seattle this week and some of us had the fantastic opportunity to hear him speak.  When you go to a Van Jones presentation though, it’s not just hearing him speak – it is a full-on sensory experience because he is so present and alive and full of these great ideas about sustainability and a green collar economy that are – at the same time - forward-thinking, revolutionary and obvious.  We have just been blind.  That is until Van Jones helped to open our eyes to the truths standing before us.

Van Jones, for those who are unfortunate not to know, is the founding president of Green For All, an organization that promotes green collar jobs (think installing solar panels and working on wind turbines – or what Van calls “caulk gun jobs”) and opportunities for the disadvantaged.  His mission is to help build an inclusive, green economy strong enough to resolve the ecological crisis and lift millions of people out of poverty.  He is a tireless advocate, committed to creating “green pathways out of poverty” and expanding and diversifying the coalition fighting global warming.  He is also the author of The Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems.book_thumb1

I was able to hear him speak at the Seattle Chamber’s Sustainability Breakfast on November 13th.  Here are some of his key messages that I took away from this awesome presentation:

  • With the downturn of the economy, the floor has fallen out from beneath us.  But with the election of president-elect Barack Obama (wahoo!), the ceiling has been lifted off.  So what is it going to be: fall or fly?
  • We need to move our econonmy away from one of consumption to one of production.  This will help ensure jobs stay here instead of getting shipped overseas.
  • He is calling for a new phase in the fight against global warming: Retrofit America.  We need to weatherize our existing buildings, make them more energy-efficient.  And in doing so, we are creating jobs.  We need people to go in and perform energy audits on our buildings.  We need people to install double pane windows.  And to install new sustainable insulation.  And to weather-strip around doors.  That’s economic and environmental sustainability.
  • Lastly, we need to stop paying the polluters and make them pay.  We can’t litter for free so why can Big Oil?

Needless to say, we are HUGE fans of Van’s.  I highly recommend experiencing one of his presentations for yourself if you are so lucky.

Pervious Asphalt November 14, 2008

One of our clients, Piper Village, is a new urban village under development in the Greenwood neighborhood.  Spanning the next ten years or so, this mix of new apartments, townhomes and street-level retail will revitalize the area – transforming it into a more welcoming destination instead of a blurred vision as you speed past on NW 85th.

Piper Village is the first project in North Seattle to pave with pervious asphalt.  Already installed in the parking lot behind The Sedges at Piper Village, a new apartment and retail building currently under construction, this is also the largest application of pervious asphalt in all of Seattle.  Since asphalt isn’t something people usually get excited about – and since it’s hard to fully describe how cool pervious asphalt is with words only – we filmed a video about it today.  It’s a short educational clip that does a side-by-side comparison of regular asphalt and its more sustainable alternative.  The water literally disappears on the pervious asphalt.  You have to see it to believe it:

Dia de los Muertos Celebration at the PNA November 10, 2008

Parsons Public Relations is fortunate to be located across the street from one of Seattle’s most prominent community centers, the Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA). As an active part of our community, PNA often hosts events to foster neighborhood involvement.  Friday, as I was walking back to the office after having dinner with a friend, I came across a parade and festival for Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Crowds of people from the neighborhood were gathered in the street watching music and dance performances and honoring this traditional Mexican celebration of life and death. The performance troop moved inside PNA’s building and I was curious enough to join the crowd.  Inside, I found an entire set up of art, food, crafts and a community altar.

It was such a nice treat to mingle with our neighbors. I encourage you all to check out PNA’s list of upcoming events, which include beer and wine tastings, concerts, garden tours and more.

Green Thumbs November 7, 2008

Brave the rain, grab some gloves, lace up your boots and help green Seattle tomorrow!  November 8th marks the third annual Green Seattle Day - a chance to get a little dirty and have some fun in the name of restoring Seattle’s green spaces.  You can volunteer at one of 19 parks across the city, with Seward Park as the main – and largest – site.  Unfortunately, Seward Park, Carkeek Park, Discovery Park, and Ravenna Parkare all full, but Colman Park still needs volunteers.

The coolest part about volunteering tomorrow?  Beyond feeling really good about yourself, of course.  All Green Seattle Day volunteers are invited to a special concert at King Cobra featuring Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard, the Saturday Nights, Sam the Human Beat Box, and an eclectic bunch of other acts.  Giving back never sounded so good.

We didn’t have a fun post-gardening concert to look forward to, but some of the Parsons team had another enjoyable work party at the Children’s Home Society garden last week.  Those of us with the less-than-green thumbs handled the weeding, while the others planted an array of beautiful donated plants.  We had the expert help of Dean Backholm, landscape designer and friend of Parsons, as well as that of some of the CHS boys.  Oh, and Kara’s munchkins helped push some dirt around too.  Enjoy some of the photos from that afternoon:

Don’t have a way to get to the polls tomorrow?

Car/bike/scooter/skateboard/foot broken?

Don’t want to go alone?

Worried about your carbon footprint?

Whatever your reason, check out Carpool to the Polls – either to find a ride or offer up a seat in your car.  Zimride, an online carpool community has launched Carpool to the Polls as a Facebook app that allows all of us eco-minded voters to find rides on election day.

If you don’t know where your polling station is, you can enter your home address into the handy Google Maps voting tool to guide you.  Genius!

No matter how you get there, please please please don’t forget to vote on November 4th!
